Signal was adopted by Network Rail as their rostering solution for track staff and machine operators.
Network Rail required software that could manage extremely complicated shift patterns and multi location shifts whilst tracking travel time and fatigue instantly. Using Signal as their machine operator competency management system, Network Rail schedule staff with track machines, competencies and attachments swiftly and easily, with all exceedances and fatigue calculated automatically on planned and actual hours.
The Challenge
The Network Rail brief required rostering software specifically for Rail to achieve the following key directives...
- Flexible employee contracts
- 140 hours over a 4 week period
- 455 hours over a 13 week period
- All above rostered hours ability to roster an average of a 40 hr week
- Ability to roster up to an hours travel at the start & end of shift which isn’t paid but needs to be factored in for fatigue
- Ability to plan travel shifts
- Base roster requirements to be uploaded with details to be added later of the working details in line with the contracts
- Fatigue Monitoring
- Ability to import shifts from internal systems

Signal was integrated with Network Rail's existing shift requisition software so that blank shifts are automatically created in Signal.
A new competency group was created in Signal to handle all the custom machine operator competencies that didn't appear on Sentinel. Complex pay rates according to competency, employee and contract were added to allow for automatic cost calculations when scheduling.
Signal's custom shift pattern creator was used to allow for book on time, stabling point, shift start, shift end, stabling point and book off shift patterns.
